Sound Advice

A little religious humor for you, courtesy of a local church. I have taken a goodly amount of photos locally and elsewhere these past few months with the intent to eventually post them to a separate page on this site. Please stay tuned, won't you?

RIP, Ronald Reagan. Our local NPR affiliate aired a classy tribute this morning, focusing not so much on the successes and follies of the Gipper's two terms in office, but on his eloquence as a public speaker. That's one of the things I remember most about the man who led this country throughout my adolescence. That, and smoking a joint with his grandson in L.A. But there's a story for another time.

Also, am I the only one whose mind can't help conjuring up images of Genesis' hilarious "Land of Confusion" video whenever I think of Reagan? Just curious.

As I remember this particular dead president, I recall having the life scared out of me when my mother told me that this "war monger" has his finger on the button and we will all die before he gets out of the White House. Not very settling for a 10-year-old.

I think every president brings something to the office, but let's face it, it isn't always good. I refuse to make the man into an idol when I disagree with most of the things he stood for and implemented. I speak no ill, but I was not so very happy when he was alive.

Not one to speak terribly ill of the dead, I also have no tact. There's a compromise in there somewhere.

Here it is: if you thought the 80s were great, then you probably liked Reagan. If you are like me, and think that the 80s had its moments but were mostly a big embarrassment, then you probably disliked Reagan. I myself found his charsima infectious, but it was always at odds with his actual policies.

And, you're not the only one who partied with that kid. If I run into again, I'll tell him you said 'hello'...

Jack Kennedy. Now there was a President. However, in death, we must not make him an idol. In two years he took part in the Bay of Pigs and the beginning of the Cold War. But wasn't he pretty to look at?

I'm no fan of Reagan, and his death doesn't make me think any rosy thoughts about him. He cut the crap out of social services and gave this country the largest homeless population since the great depression.

The only positive thing I said about Reagan is that he had a gift for public speaking, something this country's current leader couldn't buy with all the money in Texas.

On Saturday this nation lost a president who is loved and revered by many. However, in death, we must not make Reagan into an idol. Let's not forget that Reagan sponsored coups in Latin America, traded arms to an Iranian regime that was sponsoring terrorism in Israel, and armed the Contras to fight an elected socialist government. Furthermore, Mr. Reagan gave us the largest federal deficits in history while stock-piling the biggest nuclear build-up in history while at the same time cutting taxes.

Reagan may have been a sweet man, but he's no Jack Kennedy.
