Super Bowl Sunday

Despite my never having, in 36 years on Earth, even the remotest interest in football, I have always enjoyed Superbowl Sunday. I love having the city all to myself--the streets are virtually empty, as are shops, mass transit and restaurants. (I know some parents who say it's one of the best days to take their kids to Disneyland or even a local park.) Hence, it's one of my favorite days to go shopping, particularly being so soon after the holidays, a period when I loathe setting foot in any selling-of-things establishment.

After a stroll around Union Square and a quick ride on a nearly empty bus, I had Bed Bath & Beyond blissfully, deliciously to myself. Sure, there were a few women and couples scattered throughout the store (women with seriously metrosexual men to not only be at BB&B, but on Superbowl Sunday, no less!), but there were, oh, hundreds fewer people looking at salt shakers and coffee makers than on a typical Sunday. I picked out a cutting board, Brita filter and some fluffy new pillows in peace and gleefully spent the $50 gift card Jason's mom gave me for Christmas. Happy day, indeed.

(I will admit I was pleased to hear of the Superbowl's outcome, only because I knew my family of New Yorkers/Giants fans was thrilled at their underdog team's glorious victory. And a happy family is a happy me.)

Union Square, Bed Bath & Beyond, are you sure you weren't at my place?
