Autumn

I happened upon this article a few days ago and I have two things to say on the subject:

1) As a curly-headed person, I wholeheartedly disagree.
2) This is what scientists are busy studying? Did I miss the announcement that they've found the cure for cancer?

Well, September completely snuck up on me and bit me on the ass and, just as I've settled in to the month and accepted the fact that it is here, it is now almost over. It's as cliche as can be, but honestly, how the hell do the months pass by so quickly when it seems the days are filled with so much to think about and do? (And read--I just finished the utterly riveting and indispensible History on Trial, which I urge anyone interested in preserving historical truths to read.)

September included two wonderful weekend getaways: one to Reno to relax with my parents and savor some of Mom's paella and another (OK, it was August--so sue me) up to Humboldt County to visit friends, gawk at the glorious redwoods, indulge in some hippie-watching and delight in 48 hours' worth of fresh air.

September was supposed to have brought an end to my lovely summer with my boyfriend, who was due to return to NYC this month, but a change in plans (aka blessing in disguise) extended his visit and we are now happily cohabitating through the end of the year. After that, it's anybody's guess where we end up, but we are happy and I suppose geography is a minor consideration in the grand scheme of things. Right?

September also brought a sad anniversary, a new Jewish year, a new baby boy for my friend Michelle and plenty of fun, busy, productive days. Oh, and this weekend, we got our first (much-needed) rain in months. But it didn't last and now "they" are saying that a hint of rain very late in the summer, after a particularly dry season, is a sign that winter will be painfully dry. Then again, "they" (the "they" who forecast all things weather-related) have made, oh, a few trillion predictions that never materialized, so I won't be throwing away my umbrella just yet.

September also marks the winding down of my days at my current job, the result of a mutual agreement between my employers and myself that I should ramp up my job-search efforts. (As much as I've enjoyed my job, it has been a temporary arrangement from the get-go; I just happen to have stayed for 18 months!) So, anyone with leads or insights with regard to the San Francisco job market, please get in touch.

As with every year, I am thrilled to welcome autumn, my favorite of all the seasons (and not just because of happy occasions like birthdays, Halloween and other excuses for eating candy corn). Autumn in California cannot compete with the splendor of autumn on the east coast, but I'll take what I can get for now. Besides, a trip to NYC next month should provide at least a small helping of autumn's brilliance for me to carry back to San Francisco and hold close like a beloved old friend.
